One of the most exciting parts of Taekwondo is seeing your progress with every new belt you earn. The taekwondo belt ranking system gives students clear goals to work toward while celebrating their hard work. Each belt represents a new milestone and prepares students for the next challenge!

If you’re new to Taekwondo or considering classes for your child, start by learning about the belt system. It can help you understand what to expect as students advance through the ranks.

Here’s an overview of the belt ranks and the skills students develop on their journey from white belt to black belt.

Taekwondo Belt Ranking System Explained

The Taekwondo belt ranking system organizes training into different skill levels. Each belt marks a student’s development and shows they’ve mastered the requirements before moving forward.

Students begin with Color Belts, also called Gups. Color belts are for learning the fundamentals of Taekwondo. After completing the color belt ranks, students can work toward a Black Belt, also called a Dan. At this level, they continue refining their techniques and gain more advanced skills.

Different Taekwondo schools and organizations may use different belt colors or ranking orders. No matter the system, each new belt reflects a student’s growing skills and commitment to training.

At 9th Island Taekwondo, our dojang follows the World Taekwondo belt ranking system, which means students progress through internationally recognized belt ranks.

Taekwondo Belts in Order

Students don’t earn a black belt all at once. They move through a series of belt ranks, learning new skills and reaching new goals along the way. Each belt is an important milestone that recognizes their hard work and growth.

  • White Belt: The beginning of the Taekwondo journey. Students learn basic techniques, discipline, and respect.
  • Yellow Belt: A growing foundation with improved confidence and stronger basic skills.
  • Orange Belt: Continued progress through stronger stances, kicks, and overall technique.
  • Green Belt: Steady growth with better balance, coordination, and control.
  • Purple Belt: A transition to more advanced training. It includes poomsae and challenging kicking techniques.
  • Blue Belt: Greater discipline and consistency while learning more complex combinations.
  • Senior Blue Belt: Stronger technical skills with increasing leadership and responsibility.
  • Brown Belt: Advanced techniques performed with confidence, precision, and self-control.
  • Senior Brown Belt: Involves preparation for the highest color belt ranks.
  • Red Belt: A high level of skill paired with responsibility, discipline, and respect.
  • Senior Red Belt: Final preparation before black belt. A focus on mastery, perseverance, and character.
  • Black Belt: Mastery and new beginnings. A symbol of perseverance, skill, and lifelong learning.

Advancing to the Next Belt

Before earning the next belt, students must show they are ready. This includes both their taekwondo skills and personal growth. Common belt test requirements include:

  • Basic and advanced Taekwondo moves
  • Stances, kicks, blocks, and strikes
  • Forms (poomsae)
  • Sparring skills and control
  • Self-defense techniques
  • Knowledge of Taekwondo rules and values

The time between belt tests depends on each student’s progress and the school’s testing schedule.

In general, beginners earn a new belt every 2 to 6 months with regular practice and class attendance. Higher belt ranks usually take longer to earn. That’s because students need to learn more advanced skills and show greater responsibility.

How Long Does It Take to Earn a Black Belt?

Earning a black belt takes time and dedication. Every student progresses at their own pace. Regular attendance, consistent practice, and passing each belt test all play a role.

At 9th Island Taekwondo, most students earn their black belt in about 4 years with steady training.

A black belt is more than a belt color. It represents years of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. It also marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning and growth.

What Happens After Black Belt?

Earning a black belt is a major achievement, but it’s not the end of the journey. It’s the beginning of a new stage of learning and growth.

After earning 1st Dan, students can continue advancing through the Dan ranks, all the way to 9th Dan. Each rank takes years of training and shows continued dedication to Taekwondo.

Many also mentor younger students. They assist with classes and lead by example, both inside and outside the dojang.
