The 9th Island Journey

Master Jaysen Ishida

Founder & Head Instructor
Master Jaysen Ishida

I’m Master Jaysen Ishida, and I’ve dedicated more than 20 years of my life to the practice and teaching of Taekwondo. Born and raised in Hawaii, I began my martial arts journey as a young student. I was drawn to the discipline, challenge, and values that traditional Taekwondo provides.

Over the years, Taekwondo has taken me around the world as both an athlete and coach. While I’m proud of my competitive accomplishments, what means the most to me is helping students discover their potential, build confidence, and develop skills that extend far beyond the martial arts school.

Some of my qualifications and achievements include:

  • Kukkiwon 5th Dan Black Belt Certification
  • Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Master Certification
  • Multiple-Time USA Taekwondo National Team Member
  • Ranked Among the Top 32 Taekwondo Athletes in the World
  • Represented Team USA at Multiple World Championships
  • Qualified for and Competed in Multiple World Taekwondo Grand Prix Events
  • World University Games (Universiade) Gold Medalist
  • World University Championships Medalist
  • Multiple-Time Pan American Championships Medalist
  • Multiple International Open Gold Medalist
  • Junior Olympic Gold Medalist
  • USA Taekwondo National Team Trainer – Cadet World Championships
  • Trained Under Master Brian McCutcheon at Oahu Taekwondo Center

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that martial arts is about more than learning kicks and techniques. Through consistent training, students develop discipline, resilience, respect, confidence, and leadership skills that help them succeed in every area of life.

At 9th Island Taekwondo, I combine traditional Korean Taekwondo instruction with the family-oriented values and spirit I grew up with. My goal is to provide a welcoming environment where students of all ages and experience levels can challenge themselves, grow, and become the best version of themselves.

9th Island’s Journey & Mission

At 9th Island Taekwondo, our mission is to help students become stronger not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. We believe martial arts is one of the most powerful tools for building confidence, discipline, respect, resilience, and leadership—qualities that serve our students for a lifetime.

Every class is designed to challenge and inspire. Whether it’s a first lesson, competition training, or belt advancement, we strive to create an environment that supports growth, encouragement, and personal achievement.

Rooted in the traditions of Taekwondo, we are committed to building a positive community where students of all ages can develop valuable life skills, build lasting friendships, and become the best version of themselves both on and off the mat.

Our Values

The principles that guide everything we do.

Respect

We treat every student, parent, instructor, and training partner with courtesy and respect. A positive training environment begins with how we treat one another.

Discipline

Success is built through consistent effort. We teach students the importance of commitment, focus, and perseverance both inside and outside the dojang.

Integrity

We encourage students to do the right thing even when no one is watching. Honesty, accountability, and strong character are at the heart of everything we do.

Tradition

Rooted in authentic Taekwondo principles, we preserve and pass on the rich heritage of this ancient martial art to new generations.

Community

We believe martial arts should bring people together. Our dojang is a supportive environment where students encourage one another, celebrate successes, and grow as a team.

Growth

Every student’s journey is unique. Whether training for fitness, self-improvement, or competition, we are committed to helping each individual reach their full potential.
